Discover Reiki on your Path to Healing

Among the many paths toward healing and wholeness available, the Usui System of Natural Healing is still the form most widely practiced in Reiki. Reiki is a method of energy healing that has risen to popularity in recent years through the spiritual and energy healing movement. All forms of energy work, such as Reiki, Tai Chi, and Qigong, are based on the concept that all living life forms have an electromagnetic vibration, or Life Force Energy, that runs through the body. Stress, illnesses, disease, trauma (physical and emotional), and abuse can all throw life force energy into imbalance. Energy work such as Reiki is performed to heal, balance, and channel the “chi” properly, thus allowing the body to return to a state of balance.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us causing us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress and, if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Energy healing has been used for centuries in various forms. Reiki has been around for thousands of years. Its current form was first developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui, who reportedly taught 2,000 people the Reiki method during his lifetime. The practice spread to the U.S. through Hawaii in the 1940s, and then to Europe in the 1980s. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

There are hundreds of Reiki systems today. Almost all Reiki types derive from the energy healing method rediscovered by Mikao Usui about a hundred years ago, in Japan. Knowing the history and branches of Reiki helps you determine which Reiki system is best for you.

A Reiki system is a specific way to teach Reiki by a master, or in a specific school, organization, or separated Reiki movement. When someone layers in new elements, such as crystals, singing bowls, Angels, etc., to the previous way Reiki was introduced and presented to the masses, they are basically creating a new Reiki system. Reiki is a form of energy medicine based on universal energy targeted towards healing. It is an expression of life force energy. Hence, Reiki already exists within us. It’s the energy in all matter.

Reiki helps seekers discover the power of manifesting and co-creation. We learn to set crystal-clear intentions, communicate with a Higher Source, trust, and surrender. Often, the true healing of Reiki lies in the unconditional love, faith, and acceptance that we develop. The power of the mind, along with gentle touch, promotes healing to many in various forms speeding up recovery, improving depression, anxiety, pain, and more. Reiki promotes peace within, oneness with the universe, and improves overall emotional and physical well being. Since we’re all connected through our auric fields, Reiki can also be sent across time and space.

The practice of Reiki brings us into conscious awareness of being one while highlighting our choice of self-healing and awakening to what it means to be alive. While some experience ascension in consciousness, many notice that they are connected to their intuition and soul’s calling. With a regular practice, Reiki practitioners find clarity and can navigate life’s challenges with mindfulness and resilience. The Reiki practice includes embracing the precepts, meditation, sacred symbols, mantras, attunements, as well as hands-on-healing.

Today, Reiki is used in hospitals, cancer clinics, hospices, spas, and wellness centers. It’s a complementary therapy to addiction recovery, pain management, and stress reduction programs. When our life force is balanced, our physical reality, which encompasses health, relationships, and career, also flows in harmony.

In 2015 and 2016, a Harvard study was conducted by Dr. Natalie Trent that has now been accepted for publication in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

“This is the largest prospective Reiki study to date and hopefully will lead to more research. A total of 1411 Reiki sessions were conducted and included in the analysis. Statistically significant improvements were observed for all outcomes of psychological and physical health, including pain, drowsiness, tiredness, nausea, appetite, shortness of breath, anxiety, depression, mood, and overall wellbeing, with moderate to large effect sizes (all p values < 0.001). The results from this large-scale multi-site effectiveness trial suggest that a single session of Reiki improves physical and psychological health.” (Trent)

Reiki is a great complementary treatment to receive alongside medical treatment. This is because healing and balancing your energy body can help you make the changes you’re looking for in life as well as reach your overall wellness goals within your physical body, thoughts, and emotions. Reiki is a great way to discover your own energy healing path. To encourage yourself to be in a state of healing and acceptance is beneficial no matter what stage of life you are in.

Please Note: Reiki is meant to be used as a complement to traditional care or as a personal relaxation or stress reducing tool. It is not a substitute for qualified medical or traditional care.
